– one of the most beautiful cities of northern Europe, a city with a thousand years of tradition. During these years, many beautiful buildings were built. For centuries, it was the wealthiest city in Poland. Its artisans produced furniture named after the city, local jewellers made treasures at the order of all European courts, but the most famous was amber. Many local citizens made their fortune from this. Westerplatte – one of the city districts – is the place where the first shots of World War II were fired. The first independent trade union in the communist countries, “Solidarity”, was established in 1980 in the local shipyard where the first leader of Solidarity, Lech Wałęsa, worked. Gdańsk, Sopot, a well-known spa, and the harbour city of Gdynia complete the so-called Tricity.
